Grip is the reason to buy silicone
Silicone's advantage over hard plastic is friction. A phone in a silicone case does not slide off a car seat, a sofa arm or a sloped desk, and a meaningful share of phone drops are exactly those slides rather than dramatic falls. It also deadens the sound of setting the phone down, which sounds trivial and is not once you notice it.
The trade-off is that silicone attracts lint and, in cheap versions, stretches. Liquid silicone moulded over a rigid inner frame avoids the stretch, and a microfibre lining stops the inside abrading the phone's finish.
