Screen size is a category, not a measurement

Nearly every laptop sleeve problem comes from the same place: buying by screen size. Bezels have shrunk over the past decade, so a current 14" laptop can be physically smaller than a five-year-old 13", and two machines both sold as 15.6" can differ by more than a centimetre in width. Screen size sorts sleeves into rough bins; it does not tell you whether one fits.

Every sleeve here lists internal width, height and depth. Take the closed dimensions of your laptop from the manufacturer's spec page and look for five to ten millimetres of clearance in each direction. Depth is the one people skip and the one that splits base seams.

Material and use

For rain, waterproof laptop sleeves with taped seams. For a bag that gets thrown around, padded sleeves with reinforced corners. Full sizing tables in the laptop sleeve size guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size sleeve fits a 15.6 inch laptop?

A sleeve with internal dimensions roughly five to ten millimetres larger than your closed laptop in each direction fits a 15.6 inch machine. Check the actual width, height and depth rather than relying on the screen size.

Is a sleeve enough protection on its own?

A sleeve is enough protection inside a bag, where it prevents scratches and cushions knocks. Carried alone it offers little against a drop onto a hard floor.

Sleeve or hard case — which one?

A sleeve is right for a laptop that travels inside a bag, and a hard case is right for one checked into luggage or carried loose. Sleeves are lighter and take far less space.

Can a 14 inch sleeve fit a 13 inch laptop?

A 14 inch sleeve can fit a 13 inch laptop, but the extra room lets the machine slide around, which abrades the corners over time. Aim for a snug fit instead.

Do laptop sleeves fit with a charger inside?

Sleeves with a front pocket take a compact charger and cable. Putting a charger in the main compartment presses the brick against the laptop lid.
