Phone Case Materials Explained
Four materials account for almost every phone case sold: TPU, polycarbonate, silicone and leather. Each is good at one thing and poor at another, which is why the best-protecting cases combine two rather than relying on one. Here is what each actually does.
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane)
What it is: a flexible plastic that sits between rubber and hard plastic.
Good at: absorbing impact. TPU deforms under a shock and converts that energy into heat rather than passing it to the phone, which is exactly what you want in the layer closest to the device. It is also easy to mould with precise cutouts and a raised lip.
Bad at: staying clear and holding rigid shape. TPU oxidises under UV light and skin oils and turns amber, usually within six to twelve months, and it cannot be restored. On its own it also flexes enough that a raised screen edge can fold flat under pressure rather than holding the glass off the ground.
Verdict: excellent as an inner layer or a bumper. A poor choice for the whole case if you want it to stay clear.
Polycarbonate
What it is: a rigid, glass-clear engineering plastic.
Good at: keeping its shape and staying transparent. Polycarbonate does not yellow the way TPU does, and its rigidity means it spreads an impact across the whole back of the case rather than concentrating it. It also holds a raised camera lip that stays raised.
Bad at: shock absorption on its own. A rigid shell transmits energy efficiently, so a pure polycarbonate case with no soft layer passes a lot of the impact straight through to the phone. It can also crack rather than deform.
Verdict: the right choice for the outer shell and for any clear back panel. Needs a soft layer with it.
TPU and polycarbonate together
This combination is what almost every well-built protective case uses, and it is worth understanding why. The soft TPU inner layer absorbs the shock. The rigid polycarbonate outer spreads the load and holds the geometry. The clear versions get their clarity from the polycarbonate and their durability from the TPU, which is why a good clear case does not yellow and a cheap one does.
Silicone
What it is: a soft synthetic rubber, usually liquid silicone moulded over an inner frame.
Good at: grip and hand feel. Silicone has far more friction than any plastic, which stops the phone sliding off car seats, sofa arms and sloped desks — a large share of drops. It is also the quietest material to set a phone down on and cleans up completely.
Bad at: resisting lint and, in cheap versions, holding its shape. Single-layer silicone stretches over time until it sits loose. It also picks up pocket fluff more than anything else.
Verdict: the best material for preventing slips, provided it is moulded over a rigid frame rather than used alone.
Leather
What it is: usually full-grain or top-grain hide wrapped over a polycarbonate frame.
Good at: ageing. It is the only case material that looks better after a year than it did new, darkening where you handle it. It also grips cards well, which is why almost all card-slot cases are leather.
Bad at: impact absorption on its own, and it does not like sustained sun or water. Bonded and PU leather, which are not really leather, flake at the corners within a year.
Verdict: buy full-grain, expect a patina, and check there is a rigid frame underneath if protection matters.

What about wireless charging?
None of these four materials blocks wireless charging at normal case thicknesses. What blocks it is metal — a steel plate for a magnetic car mount, or a metal card sitting between the phone and the charger — and total thickness above roughly 3mm. Leather and silicone are both entirely transparent to the charging field.
