Where protection actually comes from

Drop ratings quoted in feet are close to meaningless on their own, because a phone landing flat on its back is a completely different event from one landing on a corner. What decides the outcome is construction. A soft inner layer converts impact energy into heat, a rigid outer shell spreads the load across the whole body, and reinforced corner pads take the hits that actually break phones.

The second factor is lip height. Screens and camera lenses break because they touch the ground. A case needs roughly 1.2mm of raised edge around the screen and more around the camera island to keep both surfaces clear when the phone lands face-down on a flat floor.

Protective without being enormous

Maximum-protection cases add real bulk, and most people do not need the top tier. If you drop your phone onto floors rather than off ladders, a dual-layer case with good corners is the sweet spot. Drop-test ratings in feet are not reliable on their own, because the drop angle matters more than the height. A corner impact from waist height is more dangerous than a flat landing from twice that.

Do protective cases block wireless charging?

Protective cases do not block wireless charging when they stay under about 3mm thick and contain no metal plate. Very heavy armoured cases with metal mounting rings can interrupt it.
