Covers for a device you hold for hours

A Kindle is different from a phone or a tablet in one way that changes what a good case looks like: you hold it still, in one hand, for a long time. Weight and grip matter more than drop protection. A case that adds 200 grams turns a comfortable hour of reading into a wrist ache, which is why the covers here are cut close and why hand straps are worth the small extra bulk.

The other thing that matters is the magnet. A cover with correctly placed magnets puts the screen to sleep when you close it and wakes it when you open it, which over a year saves a meaningful amount of battery and a lot of small irritations. Every folio here has the magnet layout matched to the specific Kindle generation.

Matching your Kindle

Kindle generations look nearly identical and are not interchangeable. The generation is listed in Settings under Device Options. Start with Kindle Paperwhite cases or read the Kindle case buying guide for the model-by-model detail.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Kindle case turn the screen off automatically?

A Kindle case turns the screen off automatically when it has magnets positioned for your model, which every folio in this collection does. Closing the cover sleeps the screen and opening it wakes the device.

Will a Paperwhite case fit an 11th-generation Kindle?

A Paperwhite case will not fit an 11th-generation Kindle. The Paperwhite has a larger screen and a different body size, so the cutouts and magnets are in the wrong places.

Are hand straps worth it?

Hand straps are worth it if you read lying down or one-handed, because they take the grip effort out of holding the device. If you mostly read at a table or use a stand, they add bulk you will not use.

Can I read one-handed with a case on?

You can read one-handed with a case on if the cover folds fully flat against the back, which all the folios here do. Stiff covers that only fold part-way make one-handed reading awkward.

Do Kindle cases work with the Colorsoft?

Kindle cases work with the Colorsoft only if the Colorsoft is listed on the product page. It shares a footprint with the current Paperwhite but not with older generations.
