The mouse zone is where printed mats fail

On a printed desk mat, one patch gets thousands of times more contact than the rest: the fifteen or so centimetres the mouse travels over. On a surface-printed mat that patch goes pale within a few months, leaving a faded rectangle in the middle of the design that is impossible to unsee.

These are printed into the weave under a protective surface coat, so the mouse zone wears at the same rate as the rest of the mat. Edges are stitched, which is the other place decorative mats give out.

You can wash a printed desk mat by hand with warm water and mild soap, then air-dry it flat. Machine washing and tumble drying separate the rubber backing.
