Leather outside, felt inside

Leather on its own is a poor lining. It is smooth, it holds grit, and grit against an aluminium lid is what produces the fine swirl of scratches most laptops pick up in their first year. Lining a leather sleeve with wool felt fixes that: felt traps dust in the pile instead of dragging it across the surface, and it adds a few millimetres of cushioning that leather does not provide.

What leather gives you is the outside. Full-grain hide darkens where it is handled and picks up a surface that looks specific rather than worn out, which is the opposite of what happens to a neoprene sleeve after two years.

Frequently asked questions

Does a leather sleeve protect against drops?

A leather sleeve protects mainly against scratches and light knocks. The wool felt lining adds some cushioning, but a heavily padded neoprene sleeve absorbs more impact.

How do I care for a leather laptop sleeve?

Wipe it with a dry cloth and apply leather conditioner every few months. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun, which dries the hide and causes cracking.

Will the leather get marked?

The leather will mark, and full-grain hide is meant to. Scuffs blend into the patina within weeks rather than staying as visible damage.
