Corners are where padding earns its keep

Laptops that get damaged inside a bag are almost always damaged at a corner, because that is where the whole force of a knock concentrates into a few square centimetres. A sleeve with even padding across the faces and thin corners misses the one place it needed to be thick.

Two constructions do this well. Puffy quilted sleeves use loft, which spreads impact over a wider area and is light. Dense foam is thinner for the same protection and holds its shape better over years. Puffy is more forgiving of a hard knock; foam takes up less room in a full bag.

Frequently asked questions

Is puffy or foam padding better?

Puffy quilted padding spreads impact over a wider area and stays light, while dense foam gives the same protection in less thickness and keeps its shape longer. Puffy suits a knock; foam suits a full bag.

How thick should laptop sleeve padding be?

Around 8 to 12mm of padding is enough for bag-carried protection, provided it wraps the corners rather than only covering the flat faces.

Does padding make the sleeve much bulkier?

Padding adds one to two centimetres to the overall footprint, which matters mostly if your bag's laptop compartment is already tight.
