Wool felt is quieter than it sounds
The underrated property of felt is acoustic. A mechanical keyboard on a bare wooden desk resonates through the surface, and a few millimetres of dense wool underneath removes most of that hollow note. It also insulates: felt feels warm under the wrist in a way rubber and glass never do.
Pure merino is denser and holds its shape longer than a polyester blend, which pills where the mouse travels. Check the thickness too — anything under 3mm compresses flat within months and stops doing the acoustic job.
Frequently asked questions
Does a felt desk mat quieten a mechanical keyboard?
A felt desk mat noticeably quietens a mechanical keyboard by absorbing the resonance that a bare desk transmits. Three to five millimetres of dense wool is enough to remove most of the hollow note.
Does felt pill where the mouse goes?
Polyester felt blends pill where the mouse travels. Dense merino wool resists pilling considerably better and is worth the difference in price.
How do I clean a felt desk mat?
You clean a felt desk mat by lifting dust with a lint roller and treating marks with a barely damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak wool felt, as it shrinks and stiffens.
Does a mouse track well on felt?
An optical mouse tracks well on dense flat felt. Thick loose-fibre felt can cause slight sensor inconsistency at very high DPI settings.
