How to Clean a Desk Mat

Most desk mats clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then air-dry flat. The exceptions matter though: wool felt should never be soaked, leather should never be washed, and no cloth mat should ever go in a tumble dryer, because heat separates the rubber backing from the fabric permanently.

Cloth desk mats and mouse mats

These are the easiest and the most forgiving.

  1. Lay the mat flat in a bath or a large sink, or in the shower tray.
  2. Rinse with lukewarm water. Hot water can weaken the adhesive between cloth and rubber.
  3. Add a small amount of mild soap or a drop of washing-up liquid and work it in with a soft brush or a sponge, in circles. Spend extra time on the mouse zone and the front edge where your wrist sits, which hold the most skin oil.
  4. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. Soap residue attracts dust and makes the surface tacky.
  5. Press out water with a towel — do not wring or twist, which creases the backing.
  6. Lay it flat to dry, rubber side down, for at least 24 hours. A large mat needs longer than you think.

Machine washing: possible for smaller cloth mats on a cold, gentle cycle with no spin, but it shortens the life of the rubber backing. Hand washing is safer and takes the same time.

Never tumble-dry. This is the one irreversible mistake. Heat delaminates the backing and the mat will curl permanently.

Wool felt desk mats

Felt cannot be washed the way cloth can. Wool shrinks, stiffens and loses its density when soaked, and a shrunken felt mat does not recover.

  1. Lift loose dust and crumbs with a lint roller or the upholstery attachment of a vacuum on low.
  2. For marks, dampen a cloth and wring it until it feels almost dry. Blot the mark rather than rubbing it, which pushes it into the fibres.
  3. For greasy marks, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the spot, leave it for an hour to absorb, then vacuum it off.
  4. Let it dry flat, away from radiators.

Pilling on felt is normal where the mouse travels. A fabric shaver removes it and does no harm. Merino felt pills far less than polyester blends.

Leather desk mats

Leather needs the least frequent attention and the most care when you do it.

  1. Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. This alone handles most maintenance.
  2. For marks, use a barely damp cloth, wiping with the grain, then dry immediately. Standing water leaves permanent dark patches.
  3. Apply a small amount of leather conditioner every three to six months, worked in with a cloth and buffed off.

Never use soap, alcohol, or furniture leather cleaner, all of which strip the finish. Ink from a leaking pen is usually permanent on leather — blot it immediately and accept what remains as part of the patina.

Rubber and PU mats

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry. These are the most spill-resistant option and need nothing else. The one thing to watch is that PU coatings crack if left in direct sun for long periods.

How often

Once every month or two for a cloth mat in daily use; more often if you eat at your desk. Felt and leather can go three to six months between proper cleans with occasional dusting in between. The visible signal is the mouse zone — when it starts looking darker than the rest of the mat, it is time.
